What are the similarities between Church then and now? What is going on with Christianity in Universities today?

I talk about my series of books including the latest title He Still Speaks to Kids and share some thoughts on mentoring and why it is so important. You might think teenagers aren’t interested in Christianity but what can you do about it? Also, how did I get into music and what was it like to meet my all time hero in Abbey Road Recording Studios?

Click on the image to listen
Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/73388282024-01-23T13:20:49-06:002024-01-24T03:51:08-06:00Interview with Ness Wilson - Pioneer Network UK

I was recently interviewed for the 40th Anniversary of Pioneer Network of churches in the UK. There is a focus on confession, repentance, prayer and worship among those who are gathering together.

Matthew 3:2 was the theme in my home church this past week. “Repent (change your inner self—your old ways of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance and seek God’s purpose for your life) for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” This means God’s own royal authority and power have come on the scene. Matthew 4:12 could be a forward step of direction for followers of Jesus: “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”

With so much happening in rapid succession it causes me to ask this question - “Is another Jesus Movement beginning?”. Although by no means an exhaustive list, I can see several key occurrences that has led to this significant moment:

Covid elevated anxiety negatively impacts people everywhere—all the time. This is especially felt among students trying to negotiate educational challenges.

“The Chosen” film on the life of Jesus is currently one of the most watched movie series.

The war in Ukraine and tensions with China, Russia, N. Korea, and Iran have raised fears and sobered people to real vulnerabilities we have no control over.

Pastor Greg Laurie calls people to pray and announces, “It’s time for another Jesus Revolution.” A new movie of the same title is highly anticipated before its release in just a few days.

On January 3rd during an NFL game, Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills suffered from cardiac arrest. Spontaneous prayer broke out among athletes, sports broadcasters, and fans that many believe contributed to Hamlin’s miraculous recovery. And just like that public prayer was in vogue regardless of those who would oppose it.

The Asbury Revival erupts on campus and quickly spreads to other campuses, across different states and emerging in other nations.

These and many other events and realities cause me to believe this move of God is something more than a week-long revival. We must be careful about having pre-conceived ideas about what a move of God will look like. This could be a new spiritual awakening in the tradition of the Great Awakenings poured out in previous generations. Time will tell.

For six years I have gone from place to place announcing “A New Jesus Movement is coming!” I feel that moment may be here.

Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/71401812023-01-19T08:11:07-06:002023-01-19T08:11:07-06:00My Podcast Website

My latest newsletter, looking back on 2022 and thoughts about 2023.

I turned seventy back in May. Psalm 90:10 allots three score and ten (70 years) for a man’s life. Jewish people describe one who survives that age as ‘strength’ or ‘the strong.’ Seventy has a sacred meaning in Scripture that is from the factors of two perfect numbers, seven meaning perfection and ten representing completeness. Whew…now I feel better about turning seventy! This is a BIG year for June and me on so many levels. 2022 is the 50th anniversary year of our marriage. It is also the 50th anniversary of our founding City Church with some friends during “The Jesus Movement.” ....
Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/70936292022-11-02T06:10:29-05:002022-11-02T06:10:29-05:00New Resource - Podcast
I have recently started producing short podcasts with my good friend Noel Richards.
Like so many of you, I have been deeply troubled by the tragedy in Afghanistan playing out on our daily news feeds. I have prayed, calling out to God to protect the innocent Afghan people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle between America and the Taliban. Visual images such as a picture of a little Afghan girl fleeing for her life have been especially heart wrenching for me. After many prayers I stopped long enough to ask the Lord to speak something to me to make sense of it all. When we ask the Lord for understanding and take time to listen often an answer does come. And sometimes the Lord speaks through unexpected sources. I have learned to listen to that inner ‘nudge’ in my spirit like I would an ‘ALERT’ flashing across my cell phone or computer screen.

This happened while I was reading an article by Raouf Halaby, a guest writer on the ‘Perspectives’ page of Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Aug. 22, 2021. The article about the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Kabul was entitled “Déjà vu: Saigon, Vietnam, 1975; Kabul, Afghanistan, 2021.” Dr. Halaby is a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Jerusalem to Anglican parents who came to Arkansas in 1965. After teaching for 42 years, he is now a retired Professor Emeritus of English and Art at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He is currently a member of First Baptist Church in Arkadelphia and is a writer associated with www.counterpunch.org

As I read the article, I was stunned to read Dr. Halaby’s reference to “A Spirit of Insanity” mentioned toward the end of his otherwise scholarly article. He wrote about “two of America’s tragic flaws—hubris and arrogance” as seen in the fall of Saigon in 1975 and being repeated in Kabul in 2021. As he built his case for learning to avoid these tragedies by understanding the underlying motivations, Dr. Halaby suddenly pivoted to mention “A Spirit of insanity” being loosed across the world. His exact words were, “Instead of a well-planned military action to bring those responsible to justice, Lyssa, the Greek goddess of mad rage, frenzy, and rabies and her close kin, Manea (mania), the goddess of madness and insanity, blitzed the White House, the Pentagon, Congress, every media outlet, and every living room across the nation.” Whether you agree with Dr. Halaby’s conclusions or not, the article is worth reading to gain perspective.

When I read Dr. Halaby’s reference to an ancient evil spirit, I sensed the Holy Spirit could be answering my prayers for understanding of the times. The first thing that popped into my mind was a verse in 1 Chronicles 12:32: “From the sons of Issachar were men who understood (discerned) the times and knew what Israel ought to do.” It was a familiar verse that I have often referenced as a worthy goal for spiritual leaders. It can be obvious to see what is going on in the world when we take time to observe, ask questions, read, pray, and listen. It is another thing to know what to do. I am weary of pundits pontificating on social media and commentary news shows. They seldom offer ideas for possible solutions. In my opinion in their quest for ratings these fear peddlers seem bent on stirring up more rage, more frenzy, more anxiety, more division, and more insanity. I find myself agreeing with Dr. Halaby that “A Spirit of Insanity” has been sent to steal, kill, and destroy people. This evil spirit clouds our vision and alters our ability to make wise decisions as it pushes us to look through a filter of fear rather than faith. With this evil spirit coming at people from all directions, many are just giving up the good fight Christians are called to engage in (2 Timothy 4:7). Christians and non-Christians all over the world seem to feel they have no choice but to go along to get along. And so, the schemes of the evil one continues to encroach on our minds, exploiting fears and anxieties with the goal of driving us crazy.

A pastor friend remarked recently, “As I listened to reports from Afghanistan on the news the other night, I stood up and shouted at the screen, “That’s insanity!” Many people have a desire to do something about stopping this “Spirit of Insanity.” But what can we do? What should we do? I have reflected on this, searched the scriptures, talked to friends, and asked the Holy Spirit to help me know what to do. I have written down some ideas as a place to start for me.

Feel free to use the following lists to gain perspective. And consider incorporating the following into whatever the Holy Spirit directs you to do. But please, let’s do more than talk about it among ourselves. Let’s not be satisfied to add more rants to the noise in our conversations or Twitter posts. Let’s do something, no matter how small or tentative our steps might seem. Join with me in praying for more understanding so that we can see what to do in these significant times. Here is my best shot at ideas on where to start at this point:

What I am discerning about the times:

1 We are living in the Last Days. (Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 read like current news headlines.)
The enemy of our souls has sent spirits of rage, frenzy, and insanity to literally drive people crazy.

2 “Suicides among adolescent girls surged by more than 50% during the pandemic.” (CDC) “Since 2018 the most notable increase in anxiety related disorders from 7.97% to 14.66% was among 18–25-year-olds.” (Journal of Psychiatric Research.)

3 A spirit of greed is the underlying cause of most wars and conflicts. Eccl. 5:10; Luke 12:15 (Greed gives birth to materialism and hatred. It causes us to feel we never have enough. This causes an unquenchable longing for more to rise in us.)

What I am hearing that I should do for myself:

1 Stop listening so much to the endless cycle of ‘Breaking News’ from the Right and the Left. (Philippians 4:8)

2 Use that time to get informed from reliable sources (hard to find, but out there). (Matt. 7:7)

3 Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you an understanding of the times to know what to do. (Jer. 33:3; Isaiah 30:21)

What I am hearing and seeing that I can do for others:

1 Resist the enemy by doing spiritual warfare through prayers of proclamation and declaration. At times I speak directly to the specific demonic power that is seeking to shackle people in chains of fear. For example, I proclaim, “Spirit of Insanity, the Lord rebuke you.” (Jude 1:9)

2 Move in the opposite spirit. (Romans 12:21; 1 Peter 3:9-13)

Stand against a spirit of rage and frenzy by sowing peace, working for peace, and walking in the way of peace. (Proverbs 15:1)

Don’t give audience to voices of rage, fear, and insanity that are so loud across the world right now. Rather, ask for wisdom and understanding. (James 1:5)

Stand against greed by being generous. (Proverbs 11:24-26 – The Message)

3 See yourself as an ambassador for Christ. Do this by making yourself available to the Lord wherever He wants you to go and to whomever He sends you. (2 Corinthians 5:20)

4 Find practical ways to be kind and generous to the poor. (Proverbs 19:17) There are credible ministries and organizations working into Afghanistan, Haiti, and a myriad of other hot spots such as West Coast towns being ravaged by fires. I encourage you to look for ways to serve or to give money to get relief into those areas where people have been displaced. Some are finding ways to help rescue those who are fleeing from captivity to get out of danger.

My words are not intended to stir up more fear or anxiety. My intention is to inspire you to not be afraid to resist the enemy who wants to sow insanity into your life. I believe it is easier to land blows in a fight when you can see your enemy and understand his tactics. The Apostle Paul, no stranger to spiritual warfare, gives some good tactical advice. In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 Paul shows that believers in Jesus are expected to be mighty in battle. “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” Ephesians 6:10-18 informs us of those weapons given to believers in Jesus to defeat the enemy. “We have been equipped with weapons of warfare. (The belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, feet fitted with the readiness of gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.) We can pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers, and requests.”

Some may be asking themselves, “Where is Jesus in all this?” The answer is in His name. His name is Emmanuel, the God who is with us. (Matthew 1:23) What is Jesus not doing? He is not giving His people a spirit of fear that can lead to insanity. What is Jesus doing? He is giving His people a spirit of power, a spirit of love, and soundness of mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) I encourage you to remember who you are and to pray until you hear direction from the Holy Spirit. Then find ways to do what you hear.

I’ll close with exhortations from Apostles Paul & James as an encouragement to you, dear ones. “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18) “Be a doer of the word and not a hearer only.” (James 1:22-25) I believe as you take these steps in faith you will be given understanding of the times and so you will know what to do. I am confident that with every step of faith you take, you will find Jesus waiting to meet you there.

I have always embraced a focus on pioneering the new things the Lord is doing today rather than longing for the old manna He gave yesterday. During this time of processing I asked the Lord, “Why do we need another Jesus Movement?” I remember thinking to myself, “people may think I’m just nostalgic for what many experienced back in the ‘70’s ‘Jesus People Movement.’ Then I heard, “This movement would be different from, yet the same as the first. It will be different than the 1st Jesus movement in that it will be a multi-generational rather than primarily a youth movement.”

I believe this movement could usher in a spiritual awakening that impacts the world, not just America. At the same time, it must be like the first movement in that the focus remains squarely on Jesus—not personalities, not buildings, not events—just Jesus.

As I have gone from place to place to proclaim this word I have met with encouragement and skepticism—almost in equal proportions. I have asked the Lord to let me see authentic evidence with my own eyes wherever this movement begins to rise. And I have seen a little here, a little there, sort of like the big drops of rain that often show up before a downpour follows.

I believe the coronavirus has served as an accelerant to speed up overdue transformational changes in business, education, government, media, culture, and the Church. Some wring their hands in despair as fear moves in to live with them. Others find faith to search for opportunities within the chaos. One group I call “settlers” have responded by focusing on the overwhelming challenges of holding on to comfort in the way of life they had pre-pandemic. The other group I call “pioneers” embrace opportunities to discover helpful, creative solutions to bring good news of the Kingdom going forward. Even though the challenges and sacrifices needed are great, I hope to be part of the latter group. A thought popped into my mind as I am writing this. When pioneers embrace comfort over contribution, and call it wisdom, they cease being pioneers. That is when fear replaces faith.

A couple of movements I have been watching are the ‘peaceful’ protest movement breaking out in major cities like New York, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, etc. This movement has been marked with a sincere call for racial justice. Unfortunately, it seems to be devolving into hate-filled violence, destruction of property, more division, and even murder. Americans have watched this play out on our 24-7 news loops that run everywhere, all the time. Fear is running rampant in our nation. Christians who have spoken out against these acts of hatred have been painted with the same brush stroke as bigots and racists by newscasters and government officials. Many Christians have shut down and just kept their mouths shut. I have been challenged with a verse in which Job asked himself, “Have I feared the crowd or the contempt of the masses, so that I kept quiet and stayed indoors.” (Job 31:34) Another movement I have been watching during the pandemic crisis is a grass roots prayer and worship movement. Some feel it is a reaction to government-imposed restrictions on worship. Even those churches who are practicing social distancing and face mask guidelines are under increasing media and government scrutiny. There seems to be evidence that this is the case, especially among west coast believers experiencing more than 100 days of nightly riots in Portland and Seattle. Missionary-worship leader Sean Feucht is getting a lot of attention as his team has gone into these cities in crisis with a theme “from riots to revival.” Their mode of operation seems to be simply to pray, worship, give opportunities for salvation, and baptise folks when water is available.

Thousands of people are being born again and hundreds are being baptised in the Pacific Ocean, streams, rivers, and city fountains. Their rallying cry echoes Moses’ words in Exodus 8:1: Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me.” This prayer and worship movement is attracting support by many Christians. It is also attracting hatred and abuse from the “peaceful” protestors, much of the media, certain city governments, and even from fellow Christians.

One struggle Christians are facing I want to address is the tension between two communications the Apostle Peter teaches. On the one hand, Peter instructs to “obey the leaders, obey the head leader of your country and all other leaders over you” (1 Peter 2:13-15). In another passage Peter is quoted, “Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, ‘which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.’ After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened” (Acts 4:18-21).

For me it is not an either/or, it is a both/and scenario that must be filtered through spiritual discernment. I personally embrace our government’s, common sense guidelines for social distancing and wearing face masks to slow the virus’ spread until we have a vaccine. One struggle I have is that the available medical information and government guidelines keep changing. I am concerned that during this confusing time our freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, and freedom to worship outlined in our constitution could be permanently diminished by powerful forces who have been trying to do just that for a long time.

I am encouraged by the prayer and worship movement I am observing and leaders like Sean Feucht.

The salvations and baptisms seem genuine. The interviews with Sean on YouTube indicate that he is a real guy with a heart for God. Pastor friends that know him personally tell me the same. It also encourages me that Sean has been outspoken about wearing masks and social distancing. It concerns me that many of the people attending these “riots to revival” events are not practicing common-sense guidelines. As a pastor for many years I know that not all your words of advice are heeded. Another thing I know from experience is that it is the devotees of a previous move of God that often become the greatest enemies of a new move of God. Jesus is up to something new!

One final thought: The last thing the church needs is for believers to call fellow-believers bigots, racists, stupid, or worse. I expect this to come from rants on social media from non-believers. It grieves me to hear those rants coming from fellow believers. I take comfort in Jesus’ heart for His disciples in His high, priestly prayer in John 17:21-23: “I pray that they may be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”

I believe a new Jesus Movement can rise from this pandemic. Let’s make room for differences of opinion and disagreements on non-essential beliefs among believers: worship styles, methods of evangelism, etc. It makes it more difficult to walk together when we are overly dogmatic, angry, or disagreeable in general. It is vital during stressful times that believers remain unified on the essentials of our faith: loving God, loving our neighbour, and loving one another. It might be wise to consider Dr. Stephen Covey’s words going forward, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”
Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/64246502020-09-04T04:03:13-05:002020-09-04T04:18:54-05:00Hidden Kingdom interview with Dave Bilbrough
UK singer/songwriter and worship leader Dave Bilbrough has been recording a series of interviews under the title "Hidden Kingdom". In the following paragraph, Dave explains his vision for the series:

"Exploring signs of God’s kingdom revealed through the arts. With each episode I'll be interviewing speakers, poets, songwriters, artists, entrepreneurs and friends I've made through the years as a worship leader; hearing their stories and how they communicate in their various spheres of influence.

These are conversations to inspire us to think more deeply and more imaginatively about how we use our own gifting to make known facets of the hidden kingdom to the modern world".

Dave and I have been friends for many years, so it was a great pleasure recently, to spend some time being interviewed by him.
Smack dab in the middle of this Corona pandemic, God is up to something…but what?

As the world began to shut down in late February of this year, Psalm 94:9 struck me as not only timeless, but timely. “God isn’t hard of hearing; He will hear all our cries. God is not blind. He who made the eye has superb vision and He’s watching all you do.” (TPT) Clearly, God hears our prayers and sees us in our day to day lives. Most true believers know that God still speaks, moves, hears, saves, and answers the cries of His people. He is watching over all we do. It’s just that most of the time we are not tuned in to that reality. Especially when plagues, pandemics and viruses come along we tend to ask the God who is there, “Where are you?” “Why has this happened?” “What am I supposed to do when I lose my job, my security, my freedoms, or my health?”

When schools shut down my 10-year-old granddaughter said, “It’s getting real around here, Papa.” “Is everything going to be okay?” Maybe the question, “Is everything going to be okay?” is the deepest question in our hearts. Realities associated with this pandemic must be faced. Hard choices must be made. Many have turned to medicating their fears and anxieties to just barely hold on until things get back to normal. Some are venting their frustrations online or in public demonstrations. Anger and frustration have heightened across the world. I have struggled with some anxiety as my 85-year-old mom who lives on her own has had to self-isolate. I felt it personally when invitations I had to minister were canceled for 5 months so far.

Yes, it is getting real around here.

Thankfully, I am hearing about and seeing God move in the middle of it. Record numbers of people are praying. We are re-defining who our heroes are beyond movie, sports, and rock stars to first responders. A sense of community is building among families and neighbors. New creativity and innovations are being embraced in dynamic ways. In my experience this shut down has given me some needed time to re-fresh my soul, re-frame my focus and re-think the choices I will need to make going forward as this pandemic subsides—and I believe it will. As we have entered the month of May there seems to be increasing hope that the world could open back up in phases.

I recently asked the Lord, “What now?”

I heard in my spirit that God has given us a forced Sabbath, a Selah to pause, reflect and gain strength and perspective for what is to come. I do not sense status quo is what we should look for. As many people voice a longing to get things back to normal, I find myself wondering if getting back to normal is what God is after. I do not feel going back to the way things have always been is necessarily the best move for the body of Christ or the culture. There is something new in the spiritual atmosphere. I’ve seen a release of creativity in people as they have called out to God for help with their businesses, their schools, their families, their jobs, and their churches. Although I do not believe the Lord brought this pandemic, I do believe He has answers and solutions for it. He is still the One who provides, heals, and brings breakthroughs. He is the One who gives ideas, knowledge, and wisdom to people so they can bless others. Once again, God is flipping the script of Romans 8:28, “causing those things the enemy meant for evil toward the good of those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

My encouragement in this time is to consider three things:

#1. Embrace simplicity. Many choose to live like zombies stumbling around in fear, unable to sleep, wandering aimlessly trying to get from point A to point B as fast as possible. “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by John Mark Comer is a good resource. It has messed with me in so many good ways. It helped me see that we do not have to go back to an unnecessarily, complicated life. Get rid of some stuff. Cancel a meeting, or two. Only watch news once per day. Laugh about something. Go outside.

“Life is right under our noses, waiting to be enjoyed.” J. Comer

#2. Be realistic. What worked in the past may not be effective now. God is up to something new! Stop pushing to meet unrealistic expectations either from within yourself, from others, or from past traditions. God still gives new mercies every morning. He will release new, creative ideas for more effective ways of doing things. The day of the personality driven, traditional, ‘one size fits all’ approach to government, education, business, and church is dying. Keeping it real is more than a buzz phrase. Taking an honest look at what is working and what isn’t will help us move forward together.

It is a time to speak and act with relevance a new generation can run with.

#3. Be hopeful. Now is a new day for the people of God to stand together as one, go and make disciples, and keep our focus on Jesus. This is NOT a time to focus on ourselves, our wants, our ministries, or our preferences. “When God’s people live together in unity, there…in that place He commands a blessing, life forever more.” (Ps. 133) It is NOT a time to shut down being active in sharing our faith. (Philemon 1:6) It IS a time to let all we do be shaped by creatively placing our focus on Jesus through loving our neighbours out beyond church walls. I believe we are in a time for releasing God’s kingdom into our neighborhoods, cities, and nations. I mean, that is why we’re here, isn’t it? God’s life gets bigger in us when we focus on Jesus’ top two of his top ten list: “Love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbours as we love ourselves.” (Matt. 22:38-40)

Where God’s life is, there is hope for the future.

I have experienced some wonderful seasons in my life as a pastor, a prophet, songwriter, and worship leader. We can honor and learn from the past, and we should. It is ok to brag on what Jesus has done in our lives to encourage ourselves and others to remember His faithfulness. But we simply cannot live on past accomplishments or past moves of God’s spirit. It gets exhausting to keep trying to repeat or recapture what has gone before. Throughout history the Holy Spirit has led God’s people forward in rest, peace, and timely action. We can no longer go through the motions of doing things because they worked in the past. It is a time to fully follow Jesus as He brings new forward movement, new creative expressions, and all with a doable rhythm of passion and rest. Living this way will make Jesus attractive and intelligible to those who hunger and thirst for God’s kingdom to break into earth as it is in heaven. Yes, God is up to something in the middle of this pandemic. He sees us and hears us. God is with us, watching over all we do. It is going to be okay.

The sixth in a short series of stories behind the songs.

This one is 'We Bow Low' from Tim Sheppard

The story behind the song “We Bow Low” goes back more than 50 years. I was raised in a strong, conservative Christian home. We attended church services every time the doors were open. Though our singing was hearty, I never saw any other physical expressions used in worship.

Years later, when I first saw someone lift their hands in worship, I actually thought they were asking a question…seriously! Stirred by a hunger for something more, I began to search the Scriptures and began to understand the true meaning of worship and praise.

Though “worship” and “praise” are often used interchangeably, they actually have different meanings. Worship refers to a way of life. Romans 12:1 (NCV) says,

“So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship.”

So, worship is offering one’s life to God as a living sacrifice. It is yielding one’s life in submission to and adoration of God.

Praise, however, is adoration of God that is vocal, audible or visible. God’s Word exhorts us to outwardly express our love to God. Here is Psalm 100:1 with the original Hebrew words in parentheses and then an explanation of their literal meanings.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving [todah], and into his courts with praise [tehillah]: be thankful [yadah] unto him, and bless [barak] his name.”

“Thanksgiving” [todah] – To extend the hands in a sacrifice of praise, thanksgiving, or thank-offering (used in connection with offerings).

“Praise” [tehillah] – To sing, to laud (perceived as involving music, especially singing).

“Be thankful” [yadah] – To worship with extended hands, to throw out the hands, to give thanks (the second most frequently occurring word translated “praise” in the Old Covenant).

“Bless” [barak] – To kneel, to bless, to salute, to declare God the origin of power for success, prosperity, fertility.

You can worship without anyone around you knowing, but you cannot praise God without everyone around you knowing, because praise is worship that is active, assertive, demonstrative and open.

As I grew in my desire to praise God biblically, I became more outwardly expressive, not because I felt comfortable, but because I saw from God’s Word that He finds pleasure in my praise.

So how does this tie into “We Bow Low”? Some of these outward expressions of worship have been almost completely lost. For example, I rarely see people bow or kneel in worship, yet this expression is so vital in humbling ourselves before God.

We are actually commanded to bow. Psalm 95:6 (KJV) says, “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.” Psalm 99:5 (NLT) commands us, “Exalt the LORD our God! Bow low before his feet, for he is holy!”

With “We Bow Low,” I felt led to write a song that would invite others to express their worship to God through bowing and kneeling. I’ve been blessed to see hundreds and even thousands at a time respond to the invitation to bow before the Lord.

The fifth in a short series of stories behind the songs.

Moment - by Noel & Tricia Richards

For the past ten years, we have enjoyed the privilege of living on the Spanish island of Mallorca. We have discovered a different rhythm of life here, which is such a contrast to the way we used to live. It is a much slower pace of life. People do not rush around – there is no need.

We now drive slower, compared to how we used to in England. Whenever we visit the UK, we notice how everyone seems to be in a hurry. The stress is tangible.

Our Spanish friends here have a phrase 'mas o menos' – meaning 'more or less'. When arranging a time to meet them for a social occasion, we will say, “let's meet at 8pm more or less”, meaning it could actually be around 8.15pm. Being slightly late is not a problem.

Another example of the laid back lifestyle in Mallorca, is August. In this month, very little gets done in the way of business. People take vacations and spend time relaxing with family and friends.

It seems to us that people here “work to live, rather than live to work”. Maybe this approach to life, combined with the Mediterranean diet, enables the Spanish to live longer.

However, this laid-back approach to life can be frustrating for visitors.

Most of us live in a fast moving world of social media, instant news and 24 hour connectivity. How many of us reach for our mobile phones within a few minutes of waking each day?

We have noticed how we have become so glued to our handsets, that we are failing to engage with the world around us. We are forgeting how to live in the moment.

Instead of enjoying a beautiful sunset, we are taking a photo of it for our social media posts.

This song – Moment - came out of our new found lifestyle, as we slowed down and learned once again, to rediscover the joy in taking time for ourselves and others.

We also had an enforced period of doing nothing, when our granddaughter went through serious heart surgery and as a result spent months in hospital. We would spend hours at her bedside, with no agenda other than to be there for her. We were forced to slow down and focus on the only thing that mattered.

As we write these words, in March 2020, many of us are going through a time of doing nothing. The Covid-19 virus has caused the shutting down of businesses, schools, travel and more. As for us, we are currently in a period of confinement, unable to leave our apartment, except to purchase food, medicines, or in case of an emergency.

These days are full of uncertainty and genuine fear for so many. But these are also days of opportunity, when we can rediscover a slower pace of life and the benefits of taking time out from our busy lives.

As you listen to the words of this song, we hope that you will begin to discover as we have, the pleasure of slowing down, living in the moment, enjoying the treasure in the everyday. Discovering that there is so much in our world that is beautiful, if we can only take a moment to stop, look and listen.

The fourth in a short series of stories behind the songs.

Come Away

I wrote a song called “Come Away” in 1996. It would become the title cut and the name of my album. Kingsway Music (now Integrity) released it on a night that Noel Richards, Matt Redman and I led worship in London, England’s famed Royal Albert Hall. I remember walking out on stage that night, amazed at how a song birthed in a season of quiet desperation had become a loud encouragement for people to walk in God’s gift of rest.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “There is more to life than increasing it’s speed.” Prior to writing “Come Away,” I had been trying to live life in the fast lane. Even before my feet hit the ground most mornings, I felt behind. I started feeling I had become a dumping ground for unhealthy amounts of stress. So, I worked harder and put in longer hours, thinking I would catch up eventually. It didn’t just impact me. My busy lifestyle didn’t leave margins for healthy amounts of time with my wife and children. I read ‘how to’ advice on time management and establishing priorities. But, as a pastor, worship leader\song writer, and speaker, I felt everything I was doing was a top priority! My work\life balance felt out of control. My health started showing signs of wear and tear. My doctor advised me to think about getting a less stressful job. It became obvious that my life rhythm didn’t allow space for what I needed most…rest and peace. One morning while listening to a favourite song by the band, The Eagles, a line in the chorus jumped out at me, “Take it easy, take it easy. Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy. Lighten up while you still can.” Sometimes a good song can inspire a ‘Kairos moment’ (a right, critical or opportune time for action). I realised the song, ‘Take It Easy’ represented something I only hoped for but not currently on my real life, set list. It was time to act.

I had to face the fact that I obviously was not good at taking it easy. And I didn’t know how to lighten up. I knew something had to give. So, I prayed asking God to help me find a path into a better life rhythm. In my spirit I heard, “You need to come apart before you come apart.” That sounded familiar. It was another way of saying the words Jesus said to His disciples in Mark 6:31, “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, Jesus said to them, “Come away with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Hmm, maybe there’s a reason that remembering to rest is #4 on God’s top ten list (Exodus 20:3-17).

Many have identified with the ‘Come Away’ lyrics, “Life gets so busy, feel like a leaf in the wind. Years flying past, can’t remember where I’ve been.” My countrymen and women are good at doing busy! I felt like I could have been the poster child for busy Americans! Busyness is an unspoken value in our nation that drives us to achieve goals. It’s often connected to having a sense of importance. I was learning the hard way that being too busy doesn’t always add to your importance. In fact, it often takes you away from what is most important in this life…walking in rest with a sense of peace. The verse continues, “Just when I think I’ll come apart at the seams, a little voice whispers, then it screams out to me, Come Away, Come Away, Come Away. Let’s stop for a while.” The last line in the song shows my determination to get over my addiction to busy, “So I’m throwing out the paper, turning off the T.V. Gonna find a quiet place and let the Lord speak to me.”

My friend, Pastor Brady Boyd wrote a book about Sabbath rest called, “Addicted to Busy.” For many, a ‘sabbath rest’ sounds like a law to keep rather than a gift to enjoy.

There is an important key to unlock rest in Pastor Brady’s profound statement that would do us all good to remember, “Rest isn’t an obligation, it’s a gift.”

When you can, take some time to listen to my song in its entirety? I encourage you to get honest with yourself about your life rhythm. If you feel you are coming apart at the seams, you might listen for that still small voice that calls out, “Come Away, Come Away, Come Away. Let’s stop for a while.” I hope this song inspires you to lighten up while you still can. I would love to hear your thoughts or comments about the song.
The third in a short series of stories behind the songs.

This one is 'Linger' from Tim Sheppard

As one of the worship pastors at Gateway Church, I serve with a team that begins every Monday morning together with a time of worship and prayer. In January of 2018, during one of those Monday morning meetings, another worship pastor read the following passage:

“It was Moses’ practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside. As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses. When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents. Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting” (Exodus 33:7-11, NLT).

Then, he challenged us to become just like Joshua by especially devoting 2018 to God as a year of lingering.

As I began to spend more time alone with God than ever before, a song idea was born. The title would be “Linger.” I considered a lyric line about lingering in the Sanctuary…waiting in the Upper Room. The more I meditated on this, I realized that God Himself is our Sanctuary; He is our Upper Room.

Soon after this, I was asked to cowrite with Ethan Hulse, an amazing songwriter from Nashville. I shared the “Linger” theme with Ethan. He immediately resonated with it, and within less than an hour, we wrote “Linger” together.

Lingering is our response to God’s invitation to commune with us. It is born out of a deep, unquenchable desire to know Him. The One who formed us from the dust and breathed into our nostrils the breath of life, the One who spoke to Moses from a burning bush, the One whose presence overwhelmed Isaiah with his sin and unworthiness, the One whom the saints and angels now continuously worship before the Throne, tore the veil so we can enter in.

This same God invites us to lean upon His chest. How could we possibly ignore this invitation of all invitations? The All-Sufficient One who lacks nothing, who is completely set above and apart, not only by His purity, but also by His very divine nature, this One who is in a class all His own, has built a pathway into His presence so we can be overwhelmed by the sheer joy of knowing Him. Nothing else…nothing less.

It’s time to enter the tent. It’s time to linger.

The second in a short series of stories behind the songs.

This one is from Noel & Tricia Richards

The music for this song was birthed during a soundcheck for a concert in Berlin, Germany in November 2015. Tricia was playing her guitar and she began to improvise a simple melody. We captured it on a smartphone and filed it away for future use.

In early 2017, when we were looking through our file of ideas, this tune resonated with us. We sat down with our guitars and as we played together, the lyric – 'Still my beating anxious heart' – dropped into our minds. It seemed like a good starting place for the first verse of the song.

We developed the music further by adding a refrain and then began working on the ideas and lyrics that would build on this opening line. We talked about fear, stress and anxiety that can cause the heart and mind to race and thought that a song tackling this subject might be worth exploring.

When writing in any form, be it a song or a story, it is best to write from what you know and experience.

Tricia has experienced panic attacks for most of her adult life and anyone who has suffered these, knows how debilitating and restricting these can be. So we wrote this song drawing from what Tricia has been through over these many years. The lines of the song speak about the feelings of anxiety, panic, fear and uncontrolled thoughts. There is a need to find a place of peace and calm in all of this, hence the line repeated over and over again in this song – 'Quiet my soul'.

We sensed that the refrain should focus on what we need to do in those times when we feel overwhelmed by everything and are unable to cope. We hold on to what we know. We hold on to the one who is the saviour of our souls. We hold onto his words that speak peace to our souls in the midst of the storms.

Almost every time that we have performed this song in the last few years, we have people talk to us about their own struggles with panic attacks, stress and irrational fears. They have been encouraged to know that people like us, who when performing on stage can look so together, are going through a similar experience to their own.

For that reason, we believe that this song has a great role to play in these days. Life seems to move and change at such an overwhelmingly fast pace. There is an increasing need for mindfulness and taking the time to simply quiet our souls.

This is a scripture that we share when we perform this song in concert.

Psalm 131 v 2 from The Message says:

I’ve kept my feet on the ground,
I’ve cultivated a quiet heart.
Like a baby content in its mother’s arms,
my soul is a baby content.

We hope that as you listen to 'Quiet My Soul', you will find a place of peace in whatever storms you might be facing right now.

The response to my song, “While You Are Sleeping” has been very encouraging. My live performance of the song from Gateway Church has had over 100,000 views on their Facebook page. It has been released as a deluxe single by Gateway Publishing, including a version sung by myself, a version sung by Melissa Jackson, and an instrumental version. I’m delighted to see that it is being listened to across the world now.

As I considered my own struggles with sleep, I began to see that there is an epidemic of sleeplessness and anxiety in our world at present. Many have messaged me referring to fears, night terrors, and information overload as contributing factors that make getting enough rest and sleep difficult. I believe this song was given to bless people with sleep and rest. I’m hearing from people around the world who are being helped when they listened to “While You Are Sleeping.” A pastor from Texas who hadn’t been able to sleep more than four hours a night for six years started sleeping eight hours the night he listened to the song. A young lady in Delaware who struggled with fear and an inability to sleep due to past abuse writes that finding the song helped her experience peace, sleep and an absence of fear. A mom in New Zealand wrote that her baby hadn’t slept in months but has been able to go to sleep while listening to the song. Most song writers don’t want their songs to put people to sleep, but in this case that’s exactly what I hope my song will do!

I’m hearing that the story behind the song I used to introduce it at Gateway Church is helping people find faith to believe that God really does promise His beloved sleep (Psalm 127:1-2). Reading a promise and believing a promise are not the same. It helps build our faith to believe that God keeps His promises. I can tell you personally that He does. You can read more about my struggles with sleeplessness in a previous blog at www.waynedrain.com. “While You Are Sleeping” came to me in the middle of the night as a sort of modern-day confirmation of Job 35:10. Why don’t you pause and go read my story and listen to the song right now. I’ll wait for you.

My friends Noel Richards and Tim Sheppard were given co-write credits for the song due to significant contributions in musical and lyrical arrangements. Both are seasoned song writers as well. I have invited Noel and Tim to join me in writing their stories behind the songs they have written along similar themes of peace, rest or healing found in God’s presence. We will tag team giving more stories behind the songs for you in the weeks to come. It is my hope that these stories will be an encouragement to you that God still speaks to those who seek Him. And may you ‘know in your knower’ that He keeps His promises.

In this season of giving thanks, we thank God for your partnering with us this year! We’ve asked Father to give you peace, renewed purpose and increased joy here at the end of 2019 that will springboard you into 2020.

This has been a significant year for June and I. In January of this year I heard in my spirit, “2019 will be a year of opening doors. 2020 will be a year of expanding influence for the glory of God.” This is proving to be accurate up to this point. 2019 has been a banner year for WDM! We’ve ministered in 20 churches in nine states across America. We participated in conferences and training events, traveling East to the United Kingdom, West to California, North to Michigan and into the real, deep south of New Zealand.

From house churches to mega churches we have seen the Lord move in people’s lives who are thirsty to hear from Him and obey what they hear.

There seems to be tangible evidence of a global awakening coming forth in big and small ways. I sensed this when a pastor friend and I went to a high place overlooking Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. I felt I was standing near a “thin place” between heaven and earth where our pilgrim fathers cried out to God in prayer. It was as if I were joining in agreement with thousands of saints who have been interceding for our nation. I had similar experiences during the Arkansas Awakening Power & Love gathering in Little Rock in February, the Naturally Supernatural Gathering in Staffordshire, England in July and in Bethel Church Leaders Conference in Redding, California just a few weeks ago. I’ve been singing this chorus in faith, “We’ve seen you move. We’ll see you do it again!”

Some highlights: Since January, I’ve prayed with 129 people to come to salvation! I also prayed with 150 people in one conference to be baptised with the Holy Spirit and receive their prayer language.

And what a thrill to see 40+ people physically healed! Here are a few more bullet point highlights:

Discovering an increased anointing to prophesy, “It’s your turn!” to 11-12-13 year-olds.

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” William Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet.

People called us “Tech Fellowship” when we began meeting on the Arkansas Tech University campus during ‘The Jesus Movement.’ We discovered that others will give you a name if you don’t name yourselves. It was a privilege of some friends, my wife June and me to name the church we founded in Russellville, Arkansas in the fall of 1972. We named it “A Fellowship of Christians.” Names are important. They represent our hopes and dreams. Our vision was to be an inclusive church in which anyone who called on the name of Jesus as Lord and saviour could feel welcome. Many hundreds of people have been blessed and inspired by our church these past 40+ years. Our church has been a “hot house” for raising up people who have served at home and been sent out to 60+ nations to spread the good news of Jesus. We have been a worshipping church, enamoured by His presence. And to our delight, our home-grown songs have been sung across the world.

Most of the time we referred to the church as “F.O.C.” Later on we began calling it “The Fellowship.” All along we’ve emphasised those early values of relationship, worship, the good news of the Kingdom and being a prophetic people. We updated terms but those values haven’t changed. We are a church centred around Jesus and we greatly value the presence of God. We believe that God still speaks. We remain committed to doing our best to obey what we hear.

I heard a word in 2008 to pass the torch to a successor God would show me. In 2015 I asked Chris Abington if he would consider becoming the Senior Leader of The Fellowship. Fortunately, the Lord had already spoken to Chris about it. He agreed. Our leaders began a specific process toward transitioning leadership in 2017. June and I transitioned out of the Senior Pastor role we had served in for 45 years into an extra-local ministry. Although we continue to be involved in leadership as Founding Pastors of The Fellowship, we feel a fresh outward call to our city, state and the nations.

In 2016 while Chris and I attended a conference at Bethel Church in Redding, California, Chris saw a picture during prayer. He saw two C’s turned outward and underneath it written, City Church. He saw this as a visible reminder that God wants what’s inside of us to get out. He brought this to the elders. Sensing that God was shifting the landscape, we agreed. We feel Fellowship of Christians has been an excellent name for where we’ve been and continues to represent the core values of who we are. Those values won’t change. We will still gather as a church. With an increasing burden that our church should turn outward we hope to become ‘a church for our city.’ We decided together to change our name. The new name is not a re-brand. It is a name that points to where we’re going as we embrace ‘the new’ the Holy Spirit is leading us toward.

Our new name is CITY CHURCH. It is our hope that this new name will help us unite with others to see the city of Russellville and beyond spiritually transformed. We desire to better reflect God’s redemptive purpose He had in mind all along for our city. We want to go beyond meeting in buildings, beyond budgets and the borders we put up. He is calling us to carry His presence into every area of life. Our first initiative as City Church was to pay off $3 million dollars in bad medical debt for people in Pope, Johnson & Conway Counties. We want to be a blessing to those around us in real ways. I feel this is a first fruit of many good things to come.

Names are important. I believe William Shakespeare’s quote is appropriate for us: “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name smells just as sweet.” It is a blessing to be involved with a church that continues to value hearing from God and seeks to obey what we hear. It is with our agreement and our blessing that June and I embrace the new name of this multi-generational church now called, “CITY CHURCH.”
Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/58186572019-07-27T18:35:00-05:002019-08-08T09:53:27-05:00Summer Update

I heard the Lord speak to me on April 10th of this year, “I’ve got you where I want you for now.”

As I inquired and listened, the Holy Spirit began to explain what He had been doing in my life. I felt I heard Him speak about four areas to be focusing my attention on:

1 Renewing my mind as I spend time reading His word. (I have particularly enjoyed reading The Gospel of Mark from ‘The Passion’ translation.)
2 Restoring my soul through rest and reflection. (Daily quiet time, taking my day off…every week, going on vacation with my family.)
3 Refreshing my spirit in His presence. (Daily times of lingering in worship and prayer.)
4 Re-directing my energy and focus to accomplish more by doing what I’m best at. (I feel these 4 areas will be a blessing to anyone who takes time to focus on them in daily practice.)

I’m aware of several ministries around the world shutting down well known events in 2019 such as Soul Survivor’s Naturally Supernatural Conference, Lou Engle’s The Call and Mike Bickle's Onething Conference.

I asked the Lord what these closings meant. I heard in my spirit, “What you thought was the sound of a door closing is actually the sound of many doors opening.” This certainly seems to be coming to pass so far this year in my own life.

I believe there is a shift in the Spiritual atmosphere as a New Jesus Movement continues breaking forth across the world.

Some personal highlights: Since January, I’ve had the joy of praying with 93 people to come to salvation!

We’ve all been there. Middle of the night. All is quiet. All should be at peace. Except for one thing: We can’t get to sleep. Brain won’t turn off. Anxiety begins to rise for fear of not getting enough sleep to have energy for a busy day tomorrow. On several occasions lately I have been asked to pray for people who are having trouble sleeping. I felt prompted to ask an entire congregation not long ago for a show of hands for anyone having trouble sleeping. An astonishing 40-50% raised their hands! Just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, I asked another congregation the same question and received the same response. Then it hit home with me. I was having one of those sleepless nights. I tried reading boring stuff. Counting sheep didn’t help either. Finally I prayed, “Lord help me get to sleep.” I heard in my Spirit, “Be quiet.” Then the most amazing thing happened. I could hear a song being sung over me like a lullaby I had never heard. Zephaniah 3:17 tells us, “He rejoices over us with singing.” But I didn’t know that the Lord also sings lullabies to us to bring comfort…and sleep. Before I knew it I was sound asleep. When I awoke the next morning I began to sing the song I had heard in my Spirit. I remembered the melody and every word! I wrote down the lyrics and put chords to the melody. A week or so later I showed it to my friend, Noel Richards who helped me simplify the arrangement. And Noel told me he woke up singing it the next morning.

I asked the Lord, “Is this lullaby just for me or should I share it with others?” I sensed in my Spirit that the song was for all ages—but for a time I would especially sing it over adults who were struggling to sleep. An adult lullaby? I wondered if it would work for others as it had for me. I had the privilege to sing it over a congregation at Gateway Church in Dallas, this last week. I hope this video will be a blessing to you as you watch it.

I have also included lyrics and simple chords. Feel free to use the song.

I’ve found it useful to reflect on a couple of scriptures to bring rest to my soul:

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Prov. 3:2

“In peace, I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Ps. 4:8

Good night friends. Sleep well

September 12, 2018, Journal entry:

“Received a message today from David & Dale Garratt, founders of Scripture In Song hoping I could come to New Zealand to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their ministry.” I was a songwriter for S.I.S. during the 1980’s - ‘90’s. The Garratts wanted me to come but their budget didn’t allow for any travel costs. I felt an immediate tug about it to go but was concerned about how to pay for the travel and accommodation costs. June & I committed it to prayer.

September 14, 2018 Journal entry:

“I asked our local Elder team to pray with us about going to New Zealand. They felt good about our going and committed $1000.00 from our missions’ budget toward the costs. Later in the day I sought the Lord in prayer asking for confirmation. I heard in my spirit, ‘Say ‘yes’ to New Zealand. It’s good for you and June to go to that nation to honour the fathers & mothers. While there, you will make strategic connections and have opportunity to bless many spiritual sons and daughters who are receiving the Garratts' mantle. I will make a way for provision. Bless the Garratts by not allowing them to cover any costs. Trust me.’”

September 15, 2018, Journal entry:

“While praying about New Zealand this morning I heard the Lord say, ‘Settle it in your heart for you and June to go to New Zealand. Provision is already set aside for you.’ As I sat listening, I looked up to see a small airplane flying low over my house. For some reason it felt like a sign nudging me to look up and trust God. I asked June about what I heard. She agreed that we should trust God and go.”

January 10-March 24, 2019:

Our church received an offering for us that covered about half the costs. Between January and March 24th, the rest of our budget for the trip came through gifts from friends and family. The last part came in just two days before we were to leave!

March 25-31, 2019 Journal entries:

“After a 25-hour journey, June and I were strengthened by a sense that we are in New Zealand at a spiritually strategic time. We gathered to ‘pass the torch’ from the worship foundations the Garratts have laid the past 50 years to the emerging worship movement arising at this time across the Pacific Islands.”

Approximately 1200 worship leaders, church leaders and worshippers were hosted in one of the largest churches in Auckland called Life Church. People came from N.Z., Australia, Samoa, Hawaii, Solomon Islands, Europe and the United States. The atmosphere was charged! We experienced the positives of generational transfer from the worship movement that began in 1968 to the emerging worship movement today. Alongside that we felt the negatives of recent events here in this nation.

Floral tributes at the Al Noor Mosque, Christchurch, New Zealand

Two weeks before we arrived, 50 worshippers attending two Muslim Mosques in Christchurch had been murdered by an Australian extremist. The country seemed to be in shock. Many polarizing comments were being made on social media. The prime minister was doing her best to be sensitive to comfort those grieving, but also having to avoid mis-steps that could inflame the Muslim population or the non-Muslim majority in New Zealand. Someone told me that several Muslim Imans had flown in from around the world to pronounce that New Zealand would be for Allah. Memorial services were held in major cities including Christchurch and Auckland. Both were shown live on national television. I was concerned that compassion could blind Christian believer’s eyes to the truth that Jesus proclaimed.

Mount Eden

It did not escape us that these memorials were held on the same day as Scripture In Song’s 50th Anniversary gathering. In fact, the Auckland location of our two events were on opposite sides of a small mountain in Auckland called Mt. Eden. This volcanic peak originally named ‘Maungawhau’, is the highest place in Auckland. Early Maoris claimed a deity lived in the crater as the guardian of the secrets hidden in the earth. Originally used as a fortified ‘pa,’ it could provide refuge for several hundred people. It seemed a spiritual battle was being fought around this same high place where David Garratt and I climbed in past times to pray.

Meaningful moments of 50th Celebration:

My friend Les Moir said recently, “The Bride of Christ is looking a bit pale.” He went on to say, “She needs a little more colour in her cheeks.” He was commenting about the need for the church to reflect a racial mix within her congregations. I was so happy to see brown, yellow, black, and white skinned people worshipping side by side at this event. Worship during the weekend was powerful and wonderfully diverse. There was a blend of songs, sounds, indigenous dance and instruments incorporated into the worship. In addition to an anointed worship team, the Hawaiian team called ‘Island Breeze’ offered their native dance and a Maori team brought the haka. These weren’t performances but part of our worship together. I was inspired by the blending of cultures offering praises to God as Psalm 150 describes.

Island Breeze

A very personally meaningful moment for me occurred around a song David Garratt & I co-wrote a few year ago called, “Don’t You Know?” The song was inspired by Psalm 139:13 and Isaiah 49:16 to express God’s love for the unborn. This song was included in the 50th Anniversary Album, “I Exalt Thee.” The night we were to sing the song, a young man named Aaron Hardy introduced it by telling why the song had such deep meaning for him. It seems his mother had suffered multiple miscarriages. During her pregnancy they sang this song often and when their son was born healthy, they continued to sing the song over him as a lullaby. Aaron was that little boy. (It’s interesting that Aaron’s father Fraser Hardy, prophesied over me when I was 27 years old that I would be a prophet to the nations.) It’s amazing what springs up from the seeds the Lord allows you to sow. Today, Aaron is an influential young worship leader in this nation and a leader of a multi-cultural church. He is using our song to sing over the land of New Zealand now in hopes of birthing a new spiritual awakening. Thank God Aaron was born for such a time as this!

With Aaron Hardy

Taking part in the ministry of prophecy with the laying on of hands on this scale is a rare privilege. Our ministry team laid hands on David & Dale Garratt and their daughter, Mindy to commend them into the next phase of ‘the new’ God has for them.

Prayer for the Garratts

The Garratts then joined us to give prayers of impartation over several hundred young worship, business and church leaders from across the Pacific Islands. It seems the Holy Spirit is anointing many in this hour to receive the mantle of worship going forward. A sound of loud praise filled the auditorium! I felt as if it was piercing a hole in the charged atmosphere swirling around this significant moment for New Zealand for the glory of Jesus.

Offering thanks: June and I are so thankful for friends and family who made it possible for us to be in New Zealand at this strategic moment in time through your kind generosity. I could not have anticipated all those years ago what offering a simple song might mean to the destiny of a family…and a nation. I’m confident that your seeds planted in New Zealand at this time will grow into a harvest that surpasses our hopes and dreams! As the world focuses on New Zealand currently, please pray for a spiritual awakening to break out from that beautiful nation right across the Pacific for the glory of God. And thank you again for being on the journey with June and me.

Blessings,

While reading through the book of Amos in late 2018, the Lord spoke two things into my spirit:

#1. “2019 will be a year of increased productivity.”

#2. “This new year will begin a season in which the reaper will overtake the plowman” (Amos 9:13-15).

I’m interpreting that to mean we should pray for and expect an exceptionally fruitful year. We saw tangible evidence of that February 6-9 when Arkansas Awakening hosted Evangelist Todd White for a Power & Love event in Little Rock, Arkansas. 2500+ people came representing 100 area churches! After powerful times of worship and equipping in the mornings, attendees fanned out beyond their comfort zones to share their faith across the city. In the evenings we heard powerful testimonies.

Arkansas Awakening

Folks told of moving in words of knowledge and gifts of prophecy teaming up with evangelism gifts. This resulted in many salvations and healings. Participants spoke of an increased sense of faith, hope and joy. I believe we have entered a season of spiritual awakening in Arkansas and right across the world. As the world gets darker God’s people are shining brighter.

Some personal highlights:

Since January, I’ve had the joy of praying with 14 people to come to salvation. I loved ministering in the Naturally Supernatural Conference for Anglican churches in Watford, England where a number of people came to faith and were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Naturally Supernatural Conference

Following the conference, I completed another training for prophetic presbyteries. Our new teams did seven presbyteries in U.K. cities last year and we just did another one in Molesey. In addition, our prophetic teams ministered effectively during the Pioneer Leader’s Conference in Manchester. Some of our Russellville team had the significant opportunity to pray & prophesy over Members of Parliament in London during this time. I enjoyed being with our friends at New Generation Church in Sidcup and speaking to their congregation.

My time in U.K. came to an end by serving at ‘Word & Worship Summit.’ It was a gathering of international worship leaders, song writers, musicians, creatives and recording executives associated with Integrity Music in Eastbourne. It has been encouraging to hear that the prophetic words given were so “spot on” during all the events. Something is shifting in the spiritual landscape in the British Isles. Pray for a fresh, world-impacting move of God’s Spirit in the land that produced the likes of John & Charles Wesley and Evan Roberts. We’ll see God do it again!

In just a few days June and I will depart for New Zealand for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Scripture in Song founders, David & Dale Garratt. We feel it is important to participate in honoring this couple who were so influential to us and the entire Body of Christ. We have been blessed to receive donations of $3000.00 so far to help cover the travel costs and are hoping to raise the remaining $1500.00 before departing on March 25th. Please pray with us for a safe journey.

Toward the end of each year I spend time seeking the Lord for direction for the coming year. I set aside time to pray, worship and read my Bible. In early December of 2018 I was reading through the book of Amos the prophet. Most of the book of Amos is about God being angry with His people because of their sin of independence. Even though it was a time when most people were prosperous, the rich took advantage of the poor. Justice was perverted in the courts. And God’s people only went through the motions of worship. Sounds a bit close to home doesn’t it? But, God didn’t just announce judgment through the prophet, even though He had every right to do so. Rather, God promised restoration of the fallen house of David—“to prepare its broken places and restore its ruins” (Amos 9:11-13). The phrase, “To prepare its broken places” caught my attention. It resonates with the vision in my heart for cities and nations to be awakened and transformed for the purposes of God.

Something blew up inside me when I got to Amos 9:13-15: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills.”

Reading these ancient words caused a ray of hope to leap into my spirit concerning God’s people. I heard, “2019 WILL BE A YEAR OF INCREASED KINGDOM PRODUCTIVITY.”

[Productivity is defined as: “The state or quality of producing something.” It means “to generate, create, or advance bringing forth goods or services.” Productivity converts inputs into useful outputs.”] As I sat with it, I further heard, “This New Year will begin a season in which the reaper will overtake the plowman.” So rapidly will the harvest follow the plowing that it will be a time to plow again before the harvest is all gathered! Faithful investments you planted, watered, prayed over, and tended to did not go unseen in heaven. God sees you! I see fresh, young shoots from faith seeds planted in prayer pushing up through the dirt of the harvest field the Lord gave you to steward. Dreams and hopes long carried in your heart for loved ones to come to salvation will suddenly spring up from the ground (Isaiah 45:8).

A warning: Don’t allow naysayers, dream busters, fear merchants, or hope robbers to be voices that you pay attention to. These voices are just mists without substance or clouds without rain. It’s a sound of background noise that will fade at the increased sound of joy breaking forth from thankful hearts. Remember, you are a people of God’s presence. Therefore, determine to live thankfully! Let God use you to transform people and places—in the church and the marketplace. It’s a time to live in expectancy as a growing move of the Holy Spirit is already bringing awakening and transforming the culture of the city where you’ve been sent. Think bigger! Expect great productivity in all areas of your life! A great harvest will overtake the seeds of service you have planted and are planting now. Remember this: Only the Lord determines the boundaries of His beloved. It’s not a time to retreat because of the dismay and fear in the world. Be thankful you are no longer of it even as you are still in it as you go about the days the Lord gives you. Live out in the open! Let the good news of the gospel of the Kingdom already in you spread beyond church walls into society. You will see hungry and thirsty men, women, girls, and boys approach you to ask about Jesus. When they do, just say, “Jesus loves you so much that He died for you that you might live a full and meaningful life.” Why would He do that? Because “God really is good and He honestly does love you!” (John 3:16-17)

What do you do with this word? Test or examine it (I Thes. 5:19-22). Ask yourself, “Does it line up with the principles of scripture?” “Does it bear witness in my Spirit?” If the answer is yes to these questions then just faithfully live your life as a real disciple of Jesus—out in the open, unafraid of what naysayers think and unashamed of the gospel.

Expect increased kingdom productivity in 2019!

Your prayers and generosity made it possible for a fruitful 2018. We saw real evidence of fresh moves of the Holy Spirit in a number of places we traveled. Wayne ministered in 25 churches, 5 conferences, and 2 open air events in 10 states and 6 cities in Great Britain. It was a privilege to preach the gospel, minister in prophetic presbyteries, lead worship, advise churches and mentor up-and-coming leaders. The highlight was getting to pray with 150 people to become believers in Jesus! June did a great job overseeing our household, finances, and travel arrangements while teaching 20+ saxophone students each week. We both remain actively involved in serving our local church, Fellowship of Christians. We’re encouraged to see The Fellowship healthy and growing. We are grateful for this wonderful life of faith and adventure we get to live!

Many consider the Garratts to be fathers of the modern worship movement. They certainly were influential in our lives during our early years. It will cost approximately $5,000.00 in total expenses.
Sarah Brooks, Bristol, England

It was a pleasure to be re-acquainted with Sarah Books at the Naturally Supernatural Conference in Sheffield, England in the summer of 2017. She waited till the end of a meeting where I was teaching, then she told me her story of receiving a word from me when she was very young.

Here’s Sarah’s story:

“When I was 13 years old I received a prophecy written on a yellow sheet of paper from Wayne Drain. He said, “God has commissioned you to take his healing to the nations. With your music you will soothe, with your prophetic word you will proclaim freedom to the captive, and when you lay hands on the sick they will recover.” I am now in my 30’s, married and a mother of three. I am a practicing Pediatrician, as is my husband. I have been involved in health care in Uganda, South Africa and India as well as here in England. God has given me a prophetic gift and a gift of healing. I have prayed over loads of people and have seen a dozen or so healed so far. The prophetic word given to me when I was 13 has encouraged me very much and shaped my decisions.”

God hears our hopes and dreams.

After Sarah had told me her story, I was delighted to tell her what happened with a prophetic word she had given me the same night I had visited her church in Bristol. Sarah gave me a piece of paper with a prophetic word written out that said, “This week the Lord will show you He loves you by fulfilling a dream you had when you were 12 years old.” I was delighted to tell her that on February 23, 1964, when I was 12 years old, I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan T.V. show. My mom remembers me telling her, “I’m going to be a musician and singer like that bass player in the Beatles. And I want to meet him someday.” Sarah gave me her word on a Monday night as I was leaving her church. The following Friday my friend Les Moir invited me to come to Abbey Road Studios in London where my dream came true! I got to meet Sir Paul McCartney!
Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/50347402018-01-20T22:15:29-06:002018-01-20T22:18:15-06:00Arkansas Awakening
This was our fifth gathering in different venues around Arkansas.
CHANGE has been the big word for our family this year. I want to let you know what has been happening with us during this significant time. My dual call to Pastor and Prophesy to the nations seems to be expanding.

Along with ongoing local church responsibilities, 2017 has been a year of increased travel in ministry.

Stateside:

I have ministered in large and small congregations in Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Delaware, Florida and Colorado. I now serve as an advisor to 5 churches beyond my own.

(Estero, Florida)

With three other Arkansas church pastors I initiated “Arkansas Awakening, Calling generations to the fullness of Jesus.” (This is about hosting gatherings for worship and prayer for a multi-generational, spiritual awakening in Arkansas.) We have had four gatherings so far with increasing participation. I believe a new Jesus Movement is coming! (Next gathering is January 19th @ 7 pm at The Fellowship.)

(Arkansas Awakening event)

United Kingdom:

I ministered in the UK on three separate trips this year. A highlight was being a speaker in the “Naturally Supernatural Conference” for the Anglican Church with several thousand folks attending.

(Naturally Supernatural Conference, UK)

I spoke in the Pioneer Leaders Conference in Manchester just a few weeks before the terrorist bombing there. My friends Noel & Tricia Richards and I did an 8 city concert tour in February. I was privileged to lead worship in some churches on my own as well. Another highlight was being a ‘presenter’ for a three hour, Good Friday Show for United Christian Broadcasters Radio Europe. I’m told it went out to several million people around the world over Easter Weekend. It was amazing to share the gospel to that many people at one time! It was my joy to begin training teams in Prophetic Presbyteries in July and then to minister together in five presbyteries during December. All in all I visited 23 cities ministering in churches, conferences, concerts, Lark in the Park outreach and various leader’s groups. From that first day I set foot on the tarmac in England in 1979, I have been blessed with God’s favour in the land where so many world-wide awakenings began.

By God’s grace, I had the privilege of praying with 63 people to receive salvation in 2017!

This has been a year of transition for us.

(Passing the baton at the 45th Anniversary - Fellowship of Christians)

June and I passed the baton of Senior Pastors of Fellowship of Christians this past September. The transition to our friends Chris & Tara Abington has gone well and The Fellowship appears to be healthy. Lots of purposeful changes are going on across the church that I feel are helpful and timely. We know that change isn’t always embraced immediately, but in a rapidly changing world an old saying is worth repeating: “Irrelevance is a high price to pay for refusing to change.” We hope The Fellowship will be a multi-generational church and will embrace whatever necessary changes it takes to pass on our core values and historic foundations to our sons and daughters to build upon. And we hope when the time comes their generation will be able to do the same. You can read more about my thoughts on transitions in my blog

What’s next?

I will go to a part time role at The Fellowship beginning in January of 2018. That means along with the lower salary from The Fellowship, June and I will depend on ministry gifts from travel and donations from supporters to make ends meet. We have started Wayne Drain Ministries as a non-profit organization so donations are tax deductible.

If you would like to give regularly or as you are able we would deeply appreciate it.

In my previous blog, “A New Rhythm”, I said we believe this move is right and timely for us but feel ‘in between’ where we were and where we’re going. There are inherent challenges in any major change in life—good and not so good. Some days we feel like confident pioneers on an exciting adventure. Other days we pray for courage to face the challenges of new rhythms for living life in this new season. I saw from the responses to my last blog that there are many of you in a life transition season, too. Let’s encourage each other along the way.

When I was a young boy I loved watching Saturday morning ‘Western’ shows with my dad. Actors like John Wayne, Randolph Scott and my dad’s favorite, Gary Cooper were not just actors, they were role models. “Westerns” usually had a scene where the hero had to go through a narrow mountain pass as he traveled between two fields. We always knew that some “bad guys” were going to try to “head ‘em off at the pass.” It seemed the bad guys found the pass an opportune situation to rob or kill the good guys. The phrase “head ‘em off at the pass” is now embedded in American culture. It’s taken on the meaning to meet our challenges in the pass with a mind to push through to the other side. A quote made famous by John Wayne is a good example of facing fears with courage, “Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway!” He didn’t deny that strong men were afraid of a challenge as he also said, “All battles are fought by scared men who’d rather be someplace else.” Like me, you may have faced narrow passes when you would rather be someplace else.

There is often a trio of “bad guys” lying in wait at the in-between pass. The first is a loss of confidence that makes you feel powerless. The second is a sense of uncertainty that makes you feel alone. The third is the unknown part of your journey that brings anxiety. Like a trusty Winchester rifle to the cowboy I’ve found a single verse to be helpful in defeating these bad guys. II Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but He has given a spirit of power, a spirit of love and a sound mind.” It helps me to realise there are three things God has given us to overcome the bad guys. The first is a spirit of power to overcome a sense of powerlessness. The second thing He’s given, is a spirit of love to overcome a sense of uncertainty. And the third thing is soundness of mind (choosing to believe God’s truth, not the enemy’s lies) that defeats anxiety. It’s important to know there is one thing God has not given us that we don’t have to put up with. “God has NOT given us a spirit of fear.” Fear is the enemy of faith. Fear when unchallenged will keep us in-between where we were yesterday with where God has destined us for tomorrow. We all want to be fearless, till we have to be. If God did not give fear then we don’t have to give in to it!

I’ve found that heading off your fears at the pass doesn’t always seem reasonable. In fact many times retreating to where you were seems a safer, albeit lesser option. In these times it’s good to saddle up and meet our life transition challenges with a Clint Eastwood attitude from The Outlaw Josey Wales, “I tried being reasonable. I didn’t like it.”

If you are in an in-between place of life transition, you are not alone. Jesus said He will never leave you or forsake you. God has given you what you need to press through the in-between pass. I encourage you to do three things that have helped me:

#1. If you are fortunate enough to have good friends then process your thoughts, feelings and challenges with them. Ask them to pray with you and hold you accountable.

#2. Hold onto the hope found in Psalm 18:19, “He has brought (and will bring) me out into a spacious place; He rescued me (and will rescue me) because He delights in me.”

#3. Rest in Gods’ unreasonable love as you saddle up and ride forward in peace.

Taibbi, Psychology Today.)

Transitions can be good or bad depending on how we negotiate the changes in life rhythms that come. It often becomes necessary to adjust your familiar routine and embrace a new rhythm so you can continue to grow.

June and I are now a few weeks beyond the 45th Anniversary Celebration of the church we helped found called Fellowship of Christians. We enjoyed an amazing weekend celebrating and connecting with old and new friends. We officially turned the Senior Leader role over to our good friends, Chris & Tara Abington. It seemed to be a healthy transition. Our hearts are full with a deep sense of gratitude for what God has done and at the same time, a growing faith to fully embrace the next chapter of our journey. It’s been our understanding and experience that when the Holy Spirit gives Godly direction it should seem easy and any weight or burden of it feel light. Walking in a way that feels light in our spirit and easy to carry are the indicators we look for to know if we are, in deed, walking in God’s will for our lives. To be honest, we’re still feeling ‘in between’ in some ways. We are confident we’ve heard from the Lord to make this transition, but aware of our need for rest and replenishing from all the activity and emotional investment of the past few months.

So we are writing down our thoughts as part of the process we use to find perspective. It is my hope to transition well from the familiar role of Founding Senior Pastor to a new season of apostolic and prophetic ministry. I’ve been serving as a consultant to churches and individuals for some time. I’ve logged quite a few miles this year away from ‘my normal job.’ June and I are both finding the need to break some ‘muscle-memory’ rhythm patterns to re-train ourselves for what this season involves. We want to keep in step with the Holy Spirit as I travel more. June is now organising the travel and financial side of things, while continuing to teach 20-25 saxophone lessons each week. We still serve in our church community. And we are both increasingly in demand as grand-parents! My friend Bill Leckie says, “Change can be wonderfully terrifying!” But we know this, God is good and is worthy of our trust.

You may also be in a life transition. It is our hope that sharing these thoughts as we negotiate this next phase of our journey will be helpful to you. Two scripture passages are proving to be helpful and timely for us currently:

Read slowly and repeat as needed:

Matthew 11:29-30: “Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (The Message)

Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations for ever and ever! Amen.” (NIV)

In September of 1972 Fellowship of Christians was born during a move of God’s Spirit referred to as “The Jesus Movement.” Some historians say as many as 800,000 young people came to know Jesus through salvation during that national revival between 1968 and 1974. As twenty year old students at Arkansas Tech University, my wife June and I found ourselves among others leading students we initially called “Tech Fellowship.” I confess I didn’t imagine this college group would last beyond graduation. To think that we will celebrate 45 years together this month is, as we said back in 1972, “a mind blower”! As I reflect on the different decades’ highlights, I am overwhelmed with gratitude that I have gotten to be a part of such an awesome group of people. Our story is about Jesus and His people.

During the formative mid-1970’s we changed our name to Fellowship of Christians and began meeting as a church rather than a college bible study. We valued relationship, worship and team leadership. We patterned ourselves after the early church model as recorded in the book of Acts. We saw many miracles of salvation with the confirming work of the Holy Spirit bringing signs and wonders.

The 1980’s brought an expansion of God’s favor. We received invitations to share our message and home grown songs in other nations such as The British Isles, Europe, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. We formed relationships with a network of churches based in England called, Pioneer that lasts to this day.

The 1990’s were an amazing decade for us. We built a beautiful facility on a 26.5 acre tract of land across the interstate from ATU. We enjoyed increased goodwill in our city as unity grew with other churches. We held rallies to “March For Jesus” and “Praise God Together” with believers from diverse backgrounds. We ministered to hundreds of International Students attending ATU and University of the Ozarks expanding our reach to Central and South America. We were honored to initiate the first “Reconciliation Service” between the Cherokee Tribe and the people of our valley where the “Trail of Tears” passed. The three Principle Chiefs of the 400,000 member Cherokee nation graciously forgave our city fathers for allowing that horrible tragedy to go unchallenged. And our songs that were rooted in passionate worship opened the door to join thousands praising God in some of the most prestigious concert halls and stadiums in the world.

From 2000 till now we have benefitted from God’s amazing blessings across our city, state and the nations. We’ve continued to enjoy unity among local and extra-local churches as we prayed together and ministered to the poor. We’ve seen our members moving into places of influence in business, education, government, arts & entertainment. And we drank deeply from the taste of freedom from debt as our wonderful congregation took it up a level in generosity.

On September 15-17, 2017 we will celebrate 45 years together…45 years! With a heart to be a multi-generational church, June and I will officially turn over the reins of Senior Leadership to Chris & Tara Abington.

Chris & Tara are a remarkable couple who we have full confidence in to lead The Fellowship in discovering the “MORE” Jesus has for the coming generations. We can see a “Second Jesus Movement” coming onto the horizon. We say, “Amen! Let it be so!”

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God: my hope comes from Him.” Psalm 62:5

Most people in Arkansas plan vacations during June, July and August. It’s interesting to watch people working so hard, spending lots of money and getting so stressed out just to get a week or two off from their job! Pursuing rest and relaxation can be hard work. But does it have to be?

I have been blessed to visit 36 nations around the world and most of the United States in my lifetime. I love to see faraway places and meet wonderful people whose experiences are very different from mine. For me it’s more restful to stay close to home on vacations. Maybe ‘stay-cations’ would be a better description for what my family does. There’s a lot to discover right in your own back yard. I’ve met people from various walks of life who know very little of what the area around their own home has to offer. I actually met a man who lives in London, England who had never been to the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace! That’s like living anywhere in Northwest Arkansas and never attending a football game at Razorback Stadium. That just ain’t right!

I love vacationing in the ‘good ole summer time’ in Arkansas, the land of 10,000 lakes! Native Arkansans enjoy jumping into nearby creeks, rivers or lakes to keep cool. Arkansas offers many get-a-way places to camp outdoors that are off the beaten path. I don’t camp out much these days. I prefer a bed to a sleeping bag. So cabins fill the bill for me. I like to shut things down in a location preferably without an internet connection. I know, it’s living on the edge! But I guess there’s a bit of an adventurous, ‘mountain man’ spirit in me.

My wife and I are busy planning a family getaway to a cabin good friends have graciously been loaning us for 20+ years. The cabin is situated along a beautiful little river in SW Arkansas called…well, Little River. My family has made many wonderful memories there. It checks a number of our boxes. It’s peaceful and mostly safe (if you don’t mind the occasional cotton mouth or alligator sighting). Having said that it’s mostly a family friendly place. It’s a good place to write songs. And it doesn’t cost us an arm and a leg financially. My anticipation for this year’s stay-cation reminds me of an old Beach Boys lyric, “We’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow.” There’s a reason that lyrical hook is so instantly appealing. People need a Sabbath rest. The hope of resting, sleeping in, slowly embracing the morning sounds like heaven to most Americans. We are a driven, hardworking bunch. Unfortunately many of us skate on the edge of burn out much of the time. But, don’t tell anyone. We like to appear to have it all together at all times. It’s hard to keep it together when you never take time to shut it down to rest your mind and replenish your soul regularly. It’s fun to have some fun!

Now there’s nothing wrong with a big budget vacation if you can afford it. If you can do it, enjoy yourself. But I encourage you to consider a ‘stay-cation’ this year. Avoiding spending lots of money and opting out of the stress waiting in long lines at the amusement parks might just be what the doctor ordered for you. And finding rest—real rest for body and soul is a worthy, healthy pursuit.

Yours!

We have partnered with Pioneer in Missions outreaches, church planting, conferences and leadership training here in the United States and in other nations.
We will be doing something slightly different this year in our Sunday night gathering from 7-8 pm. We have invited those involved with our church in Russellville and elsewhere who we have been supporting in their work to come and be recognized and appreciated. And we have reached out to invite people from around our city and state who are actively making a positive difference in people’s lives. This will include our Mayor as well as individuals serving our city in Education, Business, Medicine, Law Enforcement, Youth Work and serving the homeless. Sunday morning will be our chance to receive encouragement as a church. Sunday evening will be our chance to give encouragement to those whose service and sacrifice we admire and want to show our gratitude.

Make plans now to attend these important services!

My church was birthed during the Jesus Movement of the early 1970s. At the time, we were comprised mostly of college and high school students. Appointed as an elder at 20 years old, I was one of the older members of our group! We were passionate about Jesus and saw many wonderful miracles of salvation and healing. Worship, baptism of the Holy Spirit and sharing the Good News of Jesus were our primary areas of emphasis.

Although we had great zeal, we didn’t have much wisdom. There were few Bible scholars among us, if any—which means we had a steep learning curve to negotiate as we aggressively served God and loved people. But God was good and poured out His grace and mercy on us in abundance.

One of my first challenges as an elder and pastor over this group was to figure out what to do with a personal prophecy given in one of our meetings. In that meeting, a beautiful young girl decided to prophesy over herself. She stood up, put her hand on her head and said something like this: “Be encouraged, daughter of the Lord! For the one I have chosen to be your husband is near you ... even now! He is wearing a red-checkered shirt and has long sideburns. He has not listened to Me, as you have, My daughter. But soon, he will receive My word and ask for your hand in marriage.”

She sat back down, wearing a particularly blissful expression on her face. I noticed a young man sitting next to her, wearing a red-checkered shirt and sporting long sideburns. He was sweating bullets with a fearful look on his face.

I didn’t know a lot about prophecy at the time, other than it was something they did in the book of Acts, which we had just been reading. But in my “knower,” I knew this was, most likely, more “knowingin part” than “prophesyingin part”!

I waited until the meeting was over and asked if I could talk to the two of them privately. I remember saying, “Now, this couldbe the word of God, but I suspect it was the word of Julie [not her real name].” I told the young man I didn’t feel he necessarily had to obey the word she’d spoken, since it might not be completely pure. I suggested he seek the Lord and counsel from others he trusted and to make sure he examined it carefully.

The young girl looked a little disappointed. The young man looked very relieved!

What I learned that day is that mistakes can be made in the name of prophecy, especially when we let our desires or emotions become the motivating factor.

Wanted: Discernment

In those days, we heard several budding young prophets trying to spread their wings with words like, “Thus saith the Lord: ‘Yea, Yea, Yea!’” One guy actually said, “Thus saith the Lord ... I forgetteth thy name!”

It was easy to discern that while that particular word may have been coming from a sincere servant, it wasn’t from God, as I was pretty sure an all-knowing God wouldn’t forget a name!

However, we also heard some prophecies and words of knowledge I knew were absolutely accurate from people I knew didn’t have any insider information. Therefore, I felt I needed to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

But how was I to handle judging prophecy? What was I to do with prophetic words that weren’t as clearly discernible?

As the leader of this church, I had to judge something I didn’t know much about. I quickly learned there’s a potential danger in personal prophecy gone goofy if it goes unchecked by wise and discerning leaders.

But through the years, I’ve also learned there’s an equal danger when the church reacts to poorly led and mismanaged extremes by rejecting or discouraging personal prophecy altogether.

Due to false teachings they’ve received or the potential confusion that can sometimes accompany prophecy, many church leaders choose to avoid dealing with the prophetic altogether by banning its practice in their churches.

I’ve discovered over the years, however, that people are hungry for genuine prophetic gifts. One word from God regarding situations in our lives changes everything. In fact, there have been times when I’ve seen unbelievers who were totally unaware of prophecy come to the Lord in salvation directly due to a prophetic word.

Four Guidelines to Light the Way

In his book 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity, Eddie Hyatt writes, “For prophecy to be used for its greatest benefit, we must avoid the extremes of a too-controlled or an uncontrolled prophetic ministry. A too-controlled approach will quench the gift altogether, while the uncontrolled approach will inevitably lead to misuse, abuse and disaster.” As a pastor and worship leader, I can tell you this balance isn’t always easy to achieve.

Having discovered early on the need for God’s wisdom in this matter, I decided to read any passage of Scripture I could find about judging or weighing prophecy. What I discovered is that Paul said, in sum, “Prophecy should be judged.”

In other words, we are to check prophetic words. But how are we to do that?

A few principles in 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 helped me develop guidelines for examining prophecies: “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil” (NIV). Here Paul is saying that if we are to judge prophecy in a way that embraces the good and brings redemptive correction wherever the mark has been missed, we need to be open without being naïve, and we need to discern without being judgmental.

I don’t want to be overly simplistic about what can sometimes be complicated situations, but I’ve since incorporated four guidelines into my ministry that I pray will help you bring forth the precious while identifying and letting the worthless go when it comes to weighing personal prophecy.

Guideline 1: It conforms to the will of the Holy Spirit. God’s Word encourages us to desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy (see 1 Cor. 14:1), but we don’t get to choose which gift we’re given. In fact, 1 Corinthians 12:11 tells us that prophecy is given as the Spirit determines—as He wills. The gifts of the Spirit don’t come from a human spirit; they come from the Holy Spirit. So a person can’t carry or operate them in his or her own will.

For example, I once prophesied over a young man who was dating one of my daughters. It wasn’t my plan to give a prophetic word to this guy. As a dad, I saw it as my job to instill fear in him, not encouragement! I can honestly say it wasn’t something I had willed myself to do—quite the opposite, in fact. However, I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to give the word, and so I did. And despite my lack of desire to give this young man a word from the Lord, I was extremely encouraged when he later told me he felt the Lord’s presence in it all. (Full disclosure: This young man is now my son-in-law.)

Guideline 2: It glorifies Jesus above all else. Revelation 19:10 says, “For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus” (NLT). This also coincides with Jesus’ statement that the Holy Spirit would arrive and “glorify [Him]” (John 16:14, NKJV).

Prophecy should never become too human-centered. By that I mean prophecy shouldn’t ever glorify or benefit an individual more than it does Jesus. An example of this would be using prophecy to enhance someone’s status or to manipulate people to give money or accept certain teachings. The Holy Spirit comes to lift up Jesus, and true prophecy will always bring Him glory.

Guideline 3: It is confirmed in the wisdom of counsel. Proverbs 13:10 tells us wisdom and safety are found in wise counsel. Ask someone you trust who has spiritual discernment to help you weigh what has been prophesied. Talk about it, pray about it and think about it in a way that allows you to process an open application of the prophetic word. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:29, “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.” The wisdom of many can help steer us in the right direction when it comes to weighing personal prophecy.

Guideline 4: It is confirmed by the Holy Spirit inside you. I know this may seem too subjective to some, but the final guideline I use is to listen to my “knower”—the Holy Spirit resident in me. I often tell people, “You’ll know in your knower.” I believe the Holy Spirit bears witness within us to help us discern when something is right or wrong, even before we have foolproof evidence.

Paul wrote about this in Romans 8:16: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit.” And David was speaking along those same lines when he said, “Deep calls unto deep” (Ps. 42:7). There have probably been times in your life when something said or done intuitively felt right in your spirit or somehow felt off. If you’ll listen to the Holy Spirit within your spirit, you’ll grow more spiritually attuned to this kind of discernment.

Identifying the Genuine

Of course, the real test of the accuracy of a prophecy is to see if the prophecy comes to pass. There are some if/then words that come from God: “If you’ll do this, then I’ll do that.” But when a word comes with specifics, such as dates, names and certain concrete things that are to happen, either it happens or it doesn’t. Although there is grace for mistakes, public mistakes need to be publicly acknowledged. When we do this, it gives credibility to all genuine prophecy.

It’s true that there are people who are gifted to read other people and that some of them exploit that gift to get into others’ pocketbooks through manipulation. Their gift is a counterfeit of the genuine gift given by the Holy Spirit. And just like those who are trained to spot counterfeit money by studying the real thing, we must likewise train ourselvesto spot genuine prophecy by studying the real thing. Here are some earmarks of genuine prophecy:

Genuine prophecy is given for confirming and encouraging (see 1 Cor. 14:31).
Genuine prophecy will build up, stir up and cheer up (see 1 Cor. 14:3).
Genuine prophecy will never contradict the principles of Scripture (see 2 Tim. 3:16).

On this last point, let me share with you a story. Several years ago, a man came and thanked me for teaching him how to hear the voice of the Lord for himself. He went on to say he had disobeyed the Lord but that now he heard Him clearly and was making some changes in order to obey what he had heard. He said he felt the Lord tell him he had married the wrong woman and that the one whom the Lord had really intended him to marry was his secretary. The man told me he was about to start divorce proceedings!

When he finished his story and began to thank me again, I interrupted him. I told him there was no doubt he’d heard a voice, but it wasn’t the voice of the Lord. When he asked me why, I said, “Because a prophetic word will nevercontradict the principles of Scripture.” I told him that though there may be biblical reasons for divorcing, his reason definitely didn’t fit in that category. I encouraged him to go home to his wife, ask for her forgiveness and then seek counseling. Unfortunately, he decided I was the one who wasn’t hearing from God, and their marriage fell apart.

Let me say this as clearly as I can: We must not allow personal prophecy to usurp the place of Scripture, prayer, godly counsel or the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Use the guidelines laid out here to protect God’s expression in your life and surrounding community. When you bear witness or agree with a word, you can affirm and encourage the one who gave it. But if a word is given that you’re unsure of, the most loving thing you can do is to examine, weigh and judge that word carefully while kindly and openly communicating with those giving and receiving the word. This is required if you are a pastor, elder or leader, but it’s also true if you’re a friend or a mentor to those involved.

If you feel you must disagree or question a prophecy, do this as redemptively as possible, with humility. You always want to handle yourself in a way that protects the dignity of others. If you’re a pastor or church leader, remember personal mistakes you’ve made in the past as you lead in this area of ministry, because it will give you a gentle compassion as you guide and correct those ministering in the prophetic.

John Wimber once said, “Sometimes God offends our mind to reveal our heart.” At times, we can immediately see what a prophetic word means in our lives, and it’s easy to trust God because we understand. But sometimes, when it’s hard to understand a prophetic word’s meaning, it’s good to follow the example of Mary, the mother of Jesus, when Gabriel announced God’s word to her: to hold the word in our hearts and choose to trust God to either confirm the word or let it be revealed as inaccurate.

In all these things, it’s clear we must be careful and discerning. Above all else, let us thank God for His amazing grace and for choosing to speak to us through His Holy Spirit still today.

Wayne Draintag:waynedrain.com,2005:Post/43411852016-08-25T04:59:41-05:002017-01-16T11:17:55-06:00Cherokee & Navaho!
Great to catch up again with my friend Arthur Red Cloud who acted with Leo DiCaprio in movie, Revenant.
